Library volunteers benefit the library and community in many ways. We welcome your involvement and offer a variety of volunteer opportunities to match your interests, skills, and availability. There are many rewarding opportunities for volunteers including keeping our collections in order, assisting staff during library classes and events, rewarding participants during Summer Reading, helping students be successful in Reading Buddies and our Homework Help Centers.

The Pickerington Public Library has many volunteer opportunities for customers at both locations.
As a volunteer, you will help us keep the library neat, organized, and accessible to the community.
Reports to: Library Staff
Responsibilities: Tasks include dusting, shifting and straightening books on the shelves, setting up displays, sanitizing computers and children’s toys, preparing materials for events, and other small but vital tasks.
Position Requires:
Special Requirements: May require ability to stand for extended periods of time, squat to reach lower shelves, and/or ability to lift and carry up to 25 lb.
Time Involvement: Flexible; typically 2-4 hours per week in 1 or 2 shifts.
Training: Volunteers will receive a library tour and orientation with the Volunteer Coordinator
The Library best serves the community when every available item in the collection is in its proper place. Volunteers in this capacity shelve or shelf-read materials for easy retrieval by library customers and staff, and maintain order of library materials. Volunteers for this position are typically needed to commit to at least 4 months of volunteering at the library.
Reports to: Customer Service Staff
Responsibilities: Volunteers re-shelve materials according to the proper filing order, shift materials on shelves when needed to make room, and organize and straighten materials on shelves. Volunteers may also shelf-read and restore out-of-order items, search for items thought to be missing, and/or process and shelve materials on reserve. Volunteers perform additional duties and assignments as requested.

Training: Volunteers will be trained in position responsibilities by library staff.
Events and classes for all age groups are among the Library’s most popular offerings. Volunteers help library staff set up and/or present Events and Classes effectively and ensure a pleasant experience for all participants. Volunteers may also participate in special events at the library or in the community.

The Homework Help Center (HHC) provides students with access to reference tools, technology, and people who can help them with their homework. HHC volunteers assist students in grades K-12 with their homework and studies. HHC volunteers are not tutors, nor should they represent themselves as tutors or prescribe courses of action for students outside of visiting the HHC.

Special Requirements: Volunteers in this position should be excellent communicators, be comfortable working with youth ages 5-17, and demonstrate patience and concern for students and their educational needs.
Time Involvement: The Homework Help Centers are open Monday – Thursday during the school year, from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Pickerington Main Library and Sycamore Plaza Library. Volunteers are asked to commit to a regular weekly schedule of between 3- 6 hours/week depending on the volunteer’s availability and library needs. To ensure adequate staffing during HHC hours, we ask that HHC volunteers honor their voluntary commitment and give at least two weeks’ notice when leaving the volunteer position permanently. Vacations, illnesses, etc. are expected and will be accommodated.
Training: Volunteers will receive an orientation to the HHC and more detailed training with the Homework Help Center Coordinator.
Summer and Winter Reading volunteers assist participants with registration, tracking progress, and prizes.

Training: Volunteers must attend a training at the beginning of each reading initiative.
Student volunteers must at least 12 years old or in grades 7-12.
Please note: We do not accept court-mandated or diversion program volunteers. Not all volunteer opportunities are available at all times or at all locations.
Pickerington Public Library VolunTeen Scholarship was established to assist high school students who have provided outstanding volunteer service to Pickerington Public Library and plan on advancing their education. The award may be applied to any type of education or training, including internships and apprenticeships; during or post high school graduation.
This service award is funded through an anonymous private donation made by two Violet Township residents. The Pickerington Public Library Fund and Fundraising committee will select the scholarship winners. Scholarships may be awarded to one or more applicants with awards of $500-$750 per awardee. The Library Fund will award a maximum of three scholarships per year. Once awarded a scholarship, the awardee is not eligible for future scholarships with this library fund.
Applications are open for submission from December 1 through January 30.
