Getting Outside – preparing for a hiking adventure

Whether you hike, backpack or just like to get out and explore, Ohio has wonderful trails all year round. What about the Buckeye Trail? The Buckeye Trail Association (BTA), founded in 1958, oversees 1,444 miles of trails around the state of Ohio. The BTA organizes sectional hikes of the trail, maintains the trail through the effort of volunteer trail maintenance crews and “trail adopters” and organizes annual events like the Buckeye TrailFest.
Never heard about the Ohio “Blue Blazes”, then come to the evening presentation at the Pickerington Library and learn more. The presentation will also include information about how to prepare for getting out for a backpacking or hiking trek and what to bring.
Join Mark Cunningham and Ted Shigley, BTA volunteers, to discuss planning for a hike or trek.
Ted enjoys being outdoors hiking, backpacking and running. He is an outdoor ethics advocate, as a Master Educator with Leave No Trace and Tread Lightly. He has led backpacking treks with Boy Scouts on the Buckeye Trail here in Ohio and section hike on the Appalachian Trail (AT). Ted volunteers with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy as a Konnarock trail maintenance crew member along the southern section of the AT and with the Buckeye Trail Association (BTA) doing trail maintenance. Additionally, he is a volunteer with the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks. All great excuses to get out outside to hike and discover the wilderness.
Mark is an avid hiker and backpacker. He is a member of the Buckeye Trail Association (BTA). He does a lot of day hiking trips around Ohio and loves to spend his time outdoors.
