Back to School! Picture and Chapter Books for Young Readers

School starts on August 16, and we have the perfect items to add to your back to school list: library books!  Get back in the school frame of mind with these books, handpicked by our youth services librarians to make the summer-to-school transition something worth reading about!

April’s Picks: Picture Books

The Kissing Hand, by Audrey PennWhether your child is headed to school or adventuring off for the first time on their own, this timeless classic is the perfect book to share.  Chester the Raccoon is scared to leave his mom on the first day of Kindergarten.  Mrs. Raccoon shows Chester an old family secret.  She kisses Chester on the palm of his hand and says “Whenever you feel lonely and need a little loving from home, just press your hand to your cheek and think, Mommy loves you” I have used this lesson with my own children.

Other Back-to-School picture books your child may enjoy:

Back-to-School Rules, by Laurie Friedman: Percy Isaac Gifford explains his rules for success and getting the most out of the school year.

Back to School with Bigfoot by Samantha Berger: Bigfoot is worried about what could go wrong at school because he stands out.  He doesn’t want to go but realizes he would miss his friends.
