Board Games for a Halloween Game Night

Monarch coverMonarchOkay, there is nothing spooky, strictly speaking, about Monarch. But when you want to get into character, this competitive game, in which you and your fellow players are rival monarchs trying to out-number and out-last each other, is absolutely perfect – especially if you’ve ever watched Game of Thrones and imagined how you would build your House allegiances.

Mysterium coverMysteriumNow we’re talking spooky! Mysterium is an incredibly fun game for players who wants to test their communication skills: one player portrays a murder victim who sends clues about his or untimely death from “beyond the grave.” But the victim is unable to tell you in words – instead, that player must use picture cards to give hints to the other players, who then try to determine whodunit. Clue + Pictionary = perfect party game!

Pandemic Legacy Season 1 coverPandemic Legacy: Season 1: You may not think that Pandemic – the cooperative game in which players team up to defeat the outbreak of deadly diseases around the world – is scary, but Pandemic Legacy throws a few thrilling twists into the mix. Every time you play, you build on the actions of previous games, and the outcomes become deadlier, like a literally unstoppable disease, and more urgent, as you race the clock (and yourself) to find hidden objects and lost players that could make or break your survival.

A Study in Emerald: A mash up of Sherlock Holmes-ian detective skills and a battle against Lovecraftian Old Ones? This game, which draws from the minds of Neil Gaiman and H.P. Lovecraft, is probably the most Halloween-ish game we could possibly suggest!

Phantom SocietyOr maybe that honor goes to Phantom Society, in which players get to be ghost hunters, or even play as ghosts themselves, as they race through a manor in Scotland, inflicting as much damage as possible (for the ghosts), or seeking out the ghosts before they can inflict damage.

If you love playing ghost hunters, don’t forget that our visit with the Ohio Ghost Hunters is happening on Thursday, October 26: hear about their experiences with ghost hunting investigations!
