Reading a book: a good way to spend a summer afternoon.
Reading a book with friends? A great way to spend a summer afternoon!
We are all familiar with book clubs for adults – at the library, we host three different book clubs every month – but there is never an age limit on creating your own book discussion group, as shown by this group of soon-to-be fifth grade girls who started their own book club group over the summer.
Every week for five weeks, the group met to discuss the book No Talking by Andrew Clements, a story about noisy fifth graders who challenge each other to a “No Talking” contest at school (can you imagine?!). Anna and her friends read five chapters per week and spent about an hour discussing the book. Each girl signed up for snack duty, which they enjoyed during their discussions.
So how did it all happen? Anna came up with her book club idea by visiting the library and browsing through the collection of Book Club Kits. Each kit contains ten copies of a picture book or chapter book, a guide on how to start a club, and discussion questions. Kits check out for four weeks and can be renewed up to three times. You don’t have to be a reader to check out our Book Club Kits, either: they are the perfect resource for teachers to check out for classroom use as well! Get your Teacher Card today.
